How do I install the NVIDIA Display Driver under Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10? Note: Before proceeding with the installation, verify.
No less than five security vulnerabilities have been found in the NVIDIA GeForce, NVS, Quadro and Tesla graphics processing unit (GPU) display drivers for Windows.
Three of these are rated as high severity and unless updated could enable a denial of service attack as well as the escalation of privileges to enable an attacker to execute malware on your Windows computer.
If all of this sounds familiar, that's because it is: in May, Forbes reported how three vulnerabilities in NVIDIA GeForce, Quadro, and Tesla graphics cards had been found and patched. They too had the ability to lead to denial of service and privilege escalation exploits.
In this latest security disclosure, NVIDIA urges users to download and install the available software updates through the NVIDIA driver download pages.
However, the warning is tempered somewhat by the fact, as reported by Bleeping Computer, that all the vulnerabilities 'require local user access and cannot be exploited remotely, with potential attackers having to rely on user interaction to execute malicious code designed to exploit one of the fixed bugs on machines with unpatched display drivers.'
All of the vulnerabilities impact Windows systems, including Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. The highest severity vulnerability is in the user mode video driver trace logger component of the Windows GPU display driver. This could, if a threat actor has access to the system, enable a 'hard link attack' leading to code execution, privilege escalation and denial of service.
Another is a vulnerability in the DirectX drivers, allowing a specially crafted shader to cause an out of bounds access to a temporary array and, again, potentially lead to denial of service or code execution.
'The NVIDIA risk assessment is based on an average of risk across a diverse set of installed systems and may not represent the true risk of your local installation,' NVIDIA stated, and goes on to recommend 'consulting a security or IT professional to evaluate the risk to your specific configuration.'
I, on the other hand, would recommend updating your drivers as soon as possible in order to protect your systems from whatever level of risk applies. A low-risk scenario remains a risk scenario and should be mitigated against to maintain the integrity of your system.
Meanwhile, Softpedia News reports that Windows 10 users need to remember that there are two update packages available. 'To see what executable is OK for your configuration,' Softpedia advised, 'locate Driver Type under the System Information menu in the NVIDIA Control Panel.'

In this post, we will show you how to update Drivers in Windows 10. You can use Device Manager, Windows Update, third-party software or update it manually. As an example, we will see how to update the USB drivers. A device driver is essentially a piece of software designed for a specific operating system like Windows 10. The OS uses it to communicate with other hardware devices. While Windows Update will update your computer system including the Device Drivers automatically, there may be a time when you may have to, on your own, update your drivers, if you are facing issues.
How to update Drivers in Windows 10
You can correctly & properly update device drivers in Windows 10 in the following ways:
Using Device Manager
Using Windows Update
Using Driver Update software
Manually download & run the driver update setup file.
Let us take a look at these four ways.
1] Using Device Manager
Right-click on the Start button to open the WinX Menu.
Select Device Manager to open the following tool.
Here you can uninstall, disable, rollback or update Device Drivers.
Now identfy the Driver you want to update. As an examplae here, we will opt to update the USB Driver.
So locate the Universal Serial Bus controller and double-click on it to expand it.
You will see various USB drivers installed. Select the one you want to update and right-click on it.
The menu will show you the option to Update driver. Select it to open the following wizard.
You may opt for either one of these:
Search automatically for updated driver software
Browse my computer for driver software.
It is recommended to select Search automatically for updated driver software and let Windows identify, download and install the driver.
If an update is found, Windows will download and install it. But if no update is found, you will see the following screen.
You may click on OK and exit or select Search for updated drivers on Windows Update.
If you have the driver file on your computer, you can select Browse my computer for driver software.
Select the driver software file on your hard disk and click OK to proceed.
There is another way. You can right-click on the Driver and select Properties to open the following window.
Click open the Driver tab, and you will see the button to Update Driver. You can use this way too.
2] Using Windows Update
From the WinX Menu, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click on Check for updates button. You will have to ensure that automatic driver installation is not disabled.
Windows will then check for and download driver updates if any are available.
3] Using Driver Update software
While there are several free Driver Update software available that will help you update all drivers at the same time, we do not recommend this method, as things have been known to mess up. In any case, should you opt to use this method, do create a system restore point first.
4] Manually download & run the driver update setup file
This post show where to download drivers for Windows 10 from the official manufacturer’s websites. It also links to official tools you can use to download driver updates. This is also a safe route to use.
I hope you find this post helpful.
